Faerch Celebrates Grand Opening of Cutting-Edge PET Recycling Plant in Duiven, Netherlands

On April 18, Faerch, a leader in circular, rigid food packaging, marked a significant milestone with the grand opening of its new flagship recycling facility, Cirrec, located in Duiven, the Netherlands. This event was a festive occasion, inaugurated by Faerch Group CEO, Lars Gade Hansen. Reflecting on the five-year journey and substantial investments that culminated in the launch of Cirrec, Hansen expressed immense pride and optimism about the future.

“We’re gathered here to commemorate not just an opening but the beginning of a transformative era for our industry towards genuine circularity—a core value for us at Faerch,” Hansen stated. The expansion triples the plant’s capacity to handle 60,000 tonnes of post-consumer tray materials annually, securing a sustainable future for the company.

The event drew global attention with former Unilever CEO and noted climate activist, Paul Polman, delivering a compelling keynote. Polman commended Faerch’s bold vision and underscored the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles as a driver for enhancing business profitability and shareholder value. “This initiative is a testament to the power of partnership in fostering sustainable industries,” he remarked.

The discussions also featured insights from Mark Conrad, a materials economics manager at McKinsey, and Jan Nielsen, Chief Investment Officer at A.P. Moller Group, which owns Faerch. Conrad highlighted the pressing need for improved recycling systems to correctly channel plastics, while Nielsen emphasized the readiness and practicality of their solutions for immediate adoption to significantly reduce waste and CO2 emissions.

Highlighting the collaborative spirit necessary for real change, Nielsen called for industry-wide cooperation. “We are prepared to lead, but success in achieving circularity requires a united effort across the entire value chain,” he noted.

Lars Gade Hansen and Jan Nielsen concluded the event by inaugurating the Cirrec facility, symbolizing a new chapter for Faerch as it leads the charge toward circular solutions in food packaging.

Founded in 1969 and based in Holstebro, Denmark, Faerch has positioned itself at the forefront of the sustainable food packaging sector. The company boasts a robust presence with over 2,200 employees spread across 16 manufacturing sites and numerous sales offices throughout Europe. Faerch is committed to innovating packaging solutions that are up to 100% recyclable and made from recycled materials, reflecting its dedication to environmental stewardship and circular economy principles.
